The calculator uses a standard MET approach to turn an activity intensity into an energy estimate. MET means metabolic equivalent of task: a higher MET represents a higher energy cost for the same body weight and time.
Calories = MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200 × time (minutes)
The result is rounded to a whole calorie for readability. The calculator uses gross calories, which include the energy cost of resting during the activity period.
The five pace bands provide a practical starting point for common walking speeds. The base values are aligned with adult physical-activity intensity references, then the calculator applies an explicit incline adjustment when you enter a positive grade. This means a level walk and a hill walk do not quietly share the same intensity assumption.
For distance and steps, the calculator uses your entered values when available. If you leave them blank, it estimates distance from the selected pace and time, then estimates steps from distance. Those breakdowns are useful for planning, but they are less personal than a measured distance or your own step count.
